Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are H. L. Hunt (you possibly know his background), a few other Texas oil millionaires and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid.” (That was President Eisenhower, writing to his brother Edgar in 1954.)

What on earth?

Also, remember how everyone thought Gold at 1900 was absurd? Currently at 1876.
I’m not saying that reflects its real value, but it seems like an accurate representation of the complete uncertainty out there.

Special ed student raped by classmate, forced by school to apologize to him, then raped again, lawsuit claims (UPDATED) – Boing Boing

Posted by Xeni Jardin on Wednesday, Aug 17th at 4:11pm

The Republic School District of southwestern Missouri expelled a 7th-grade special education student because they didn’t believe her when she told adults at her school that a classmate raped her. School officials forced her to apologize to him, then kicked her out of school for lying. She was allowed back to school the following year, and the same boy raped her again in the school library, according to a lawsuit filed on her behalf.

Happy 53rd.

Happy Birthday, Madonna.

What is it about 1958? Madonna, Michael Jackson and Prince were born that year. Talk about conquering the world.

When I was a kid, I wasn’t aware of pop culture or pop music, really. We didn’t have MTV, my parents listened to Top 40 radio in the car in the morning, but it was background noise.

Madonna was the first pop star I was really aware of. Before that, it was Louis Armstrong, Freddie Mercury and The Beatles (hi, Dad!).

By that time, it was 1998, and Madonna came out with “Ray of Light”.

I don’t really like the latest album. I don’t like the feel of it. Like she just hired some obvious names to get it done.

That said, the one thing I admired through all the years I followed her career was her unbelievable drive. I don’t know where it comes from, but I admire how hard she works, and how much she still seems to want “it”.

I don’t know what “it” is. Fame, sales, recognition? Who knows. Now that I’m almost thirty, I sometimes vacillate between admiration and sadness. The things that drive you that hard for 30 years, they’re not necessarily good things, are they?

TLDR: Madonna has been making awesome music for 30 years, have some:

  • One of the best pop songs ever:
  • Lady always puts on a show:

(By the way, the B&W video was directed by David Fincher.)

  • There are so many more. This lady was the very personification of pop culture. But most of all, she was so much fun:
  • I miss the crazy chick who obnoxiously took full advantage of being on top of the world:
